A knife roll is light and compact, suited to a few knives. Bags and cases have more slots and room for accessories. Backpacks are convenient if you travel on foot or by public transport and also carry your chef's whites. Rigid, sealed cases offer the most protection from knocks, dust and splashes, which is useful for catering, events and trade fairs.
How many slots do I need?
Count the knives and accessories you actually carry, such as a honing steel, tongs, spatulas, a peeler or a thermometer, and leave a few slots free for what you'll add later. Also check that the longest pocket fits your longest knife, handle included. For students, the starting point is the equipment list provided by the school.
Do I need blade guards inside a case?
They are recommended, especially for delicate blades or fabric pockets: a blade guard stops the edge from cutting the pocket and from being damaged against other tools. Choose one to match the length and height of the blade. They are also useful for storing individual knives in a drawer.
Can I carry my knives to work or school?
In Italy, carrying a knife with a blade longer than 8 cm outside the home without a justified reason is a criminal offence (Article 4 of Law 110/1975, amended in 2026). Going to work, to classes at a cookery school or to a professional event is generally considered a valid reason, but knives should be carried closed in their case, not ready for use, and you should be able to show why you are carrying them. Rules differ in other countries. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I take my knife case on a plane?
Not in hand luggage: knives are banned from the cabin. They can travel in checked baggage, closed in their case with the blades protected. Airlines may have their own rules, so check them before you fly, along with the rules of your destination country.
How do I clean a knife case?
Only put knives away clean and dry. Fabric or neoprene bags can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap, leather ones with a slightly damp cloth and leather-care products, and rigid cases with a damp cloth. After cleaning, leave the case open until it is completely dry. For washing, follow the manufacturer's instructions.
